“The Gates of Kiev” is intended to inspire viewers to come closer and investigate the work, to provide a destination. The work acts as a framing device, meaning the viewer can select aspects of the surrounding landscape that they wish to isolate and frame, using the negative space within the work. This makes the piece interactive on one level, and the work is intended to promote negotiation and navigation. This ‘framing’ aspect means the work and landscape fuse in a way, and the two become reciprocal and integral.
